Organization is very important in
the instruction of the child as well as the sanity of the teacher!
Where did you place your assignment? What section did you last read? Do
you remember what you got on that last spelling test and what words you
missed?
I highly encourage homeschool
parents to work hard at these skills because of the importance for your
children and their education. Even un-schooling may need some
documentation regarding books they have read or the subjects they
studied through other sources as they get older. This also shows you
care about their education and it is important to you.
Notebooks help keep assignments
together or you can get an expandable file to place papers, assignments
or even notes on books they have read and subjects studied. We use a
large notebook for all assignments and then the papers are cleared out
twice a year, sorted and recorded. Some are saved as examples of work,
such as art or writing assignments with the rest discarded once the
scores are recorded. Since we use a unit study, I keep track of his
writing, books read on each subject and even photos of some of the
activities. Some parents even create a yearly scrapbook of
these things as a fun reminder of their education. After all, education
doesn't have to be dreary.. it actually is fun and exciting!

Tidbit from Becky - I will spend the
extra money and purchase three hole punched paper for my computer
printer. In this way, I can put my schedule into a notebook in one easy
step.

A
Tidbit from Becky - Create a bookmark with a
list of assignments and/or facts to remember. This will help them keep
track of their assignments as well as remind them about those facts
they seem to forget! Using MS Work, create three columns and tri- fold
the paper for the bookmark. You should be able to get at least 3 or 4
weeks worth of assignments on the sheet. They can check off or cross
off each assignment as completed.
